Boyce’s Advice for New Entertainers

(Should also be read by oldsters to refresh skills)

Hello New Entertainer person.

Welcome to the Barbados Entertainment circuit. My name is Peter Boyce and this is my voice you are reading or hearing in your head, some what like Edwin’s song. I am not very well liked in some circles of government and with good reason too, some of them describe me as quite a nefarious character. I am considered to be a key instigator of the “withholding music” boycott in 2004 among a multiplicity of other issues my name is called in, and I assure you it is all deserved.

In order to keep you from falling into the same pitfalls as me if you want to get liked and keep getting put on the government shows I have prepared a list of 10 Do’s and Don’ts for your edification …..

Read carefully!….

#1 You are making your 1st mistake right now, reading carefully, any time they give you a performers contract to sign, never read it or query any clause, and for heavens sake never suggest that your lawyer should see it, just sign it and skin your teeth! Good!

#2. You are on the right track skinning your teeth, what ever they say about the industry publicly just keep skinning your teeth, even though you know it is not true! Just keep showing those pearly whites baby! Now you are learning…..

#3 Do not ever attend any meetings with them and ask any question they cannot answer, they will call you uneducated. That’s how I got deemed uneducated and igrunt.

#4 Do not ever go to a meeting and request minutes or research any existing minutes you might have so you can be effective! That is a no no, remember your place, you are an entertainer. Now skin your teeth!

# 5 When they call you for a meeting with authorities immediately drop everything you are doing and make your self available! Again remember your place, you are but a mere entertainer, you cannot be busy, it’s not like you work or something!

# 6. When they give you rules to competitions to peruse, do not peruse them nor send changes, when you read in the press you have agreed to said rules and you know you have not, shut up and skin your teeth!

# 7 If you want to attend workshops on entertainment business and your intellectual property rights fine, they will even sponsor some of them. However do not expect you will bring any business principles or any talk about your rights at their shows, that is a no no. If they infringe your rights by putting you on a DVD without your permission or compensation, remember the rule, Skin yuh teeth, Good!

#8 Do not feel because foreign acts coming about here and them paying them big money ($20,000 us and thing) that you could ask for more money, who you think you is?

#9 Do not make the mistake of being socially conscious and making annual donations to any major charity, they will spite you for it and drop remarks at meetings, you feel you is a business?

# 10 Do not be a member of any entertainer’s solidarity effort that is effective! Nor should you ever speak on the behalf of a fellow entertainer they are unfairing. You will be a marked man (or woman)
* Remember the Concerned Group

# 11 Do not let any body ever talk you into doing a blog especially Darron, like the one you are reading now.
Darron came to me with this idea and now I will be liked even less, do not let it happen to you!
Now skin your teeth!

Notice I said 10 but wrote more than 10, that’s what happens when you are uneducated like me?

You should now be equipped to be well liked aka loved by them. You should save these rules and follow them every day and you will be a guaranteed success!

Happy Entertaining!

#8 is so true. Especially given the amount of int’l entertainers Barbados brings & treats them to world-class treatment, the local entertainers aren’t compensated nearly as well. How long has the NCF been paying the same amount in prize monies for Party Monarch anyways? Compared to the what? 70K USD or so that Trinidad pays it’s winners, the pennies Party Monarch winners make barely cover costs of the presentation for crowd response (that supposedly makes up a small percentage in the tallied votes). Pic-O-De-Crop winners at least get a car, but isn’t East Coast the biggest draw? I thought so anyways since the ‘biggest’ stations promote more party tunes than the social commentaries (another issue but given the youth today, I’m sure it wouldn’t hurt to play more). Anyhow, nice rules, they surely seem to apply perfectly. You missed one though…don’t bother with properly made music, the foolish tunes is where the money is at.

Any way…I love it Pete…but I refuse to believe anything you said there…surely you are a man of influence and no one could treat you that shabby! I know that you are so reverred that the terms you used as name tags are really modest…I have heard you refferred to as…well..words that ryhme with blackpass, trucker etc and the passion I have over heard these expressions could only connote immense feeling for you bro. Surely you are being modest.
Thats why we all love you..you too humble and quiet. Its time you spoke up and said what was on your mind.

    ON the serious tip.
You are calling for good , transparent governance. If one has nothing to hide then surely you should be viewed as we all view you from time to time. A conduit for sharing and dissemination of forthcoming policy changes and educational peices. When you get the kind of resistance that you undoubtley have been receiving, one is left to wonder, why am I even chatting on his blog in case they come after me???// Your heart is in the right place Pete and fortunately the right thinking ones out here , even though we might not always agree with a method, we know that it comes from a place of sincerity on our behalf.
    God Bless Chief!!
