Report on Government Consultation 26th February
Here is the Boyce opinion on the Prime Minister’s Office consultation on popular media culture which took place back in February 26th, 2007. Was the consultation worth pressing your clothes for? Let’s look at it..
The event was productive in some areas and unproductive in others but was filled with information and food for thought on many matters. I received much info on the negative music my 13 and 16 year old sons are listening to on their mp3 players. So much that I tried to throw the devices away when I got home but that didn’t go too well and I had to abandon it.
We spent quite a bit of time addressing issues like internet and cell phones and it would have been useful if a Cable and Wireless rep had been there. We spoke about negative music an influence of ZR culture but there were no ZR drivers there. We spoke about negative Jamaican music being played on radio, well we had reps from Starcom and CBC there but artiste wise there were no young artiste who produced that genre of music present.
The main reason I attended was to participate in discussion on the topic:
The formation and enforcement of legislation to ensure the adherence to certain standards while not restraining the cultural development of the society and individual creativity.
This was not properly addressed; I thought they would have been discussing a legislation draft specifically and matters relating to the police policy to closing down entertainment shows and cursing on stage etc. But all was discussed was broad based suggestions of how to control music on ZRS. As I said we didn’t have ZRs so it was sorta pointless from an entertainment business stand point.
What disturbed me greatly about consultation how ever was the choice of lunch. There was no potato pasta or macaroni pie
and any one who knows me knows that’s the only thing I eat, That is a crucial matter that should be corrected for future consultations!
If during the reading of this blog there is any thing I might have written which might have incensed or offended you, GET OVER IT! There are many things I read and hear in the media on a daily basis that I don't like either. SO DEAL WITH IT! You are welcome to leave your comments though. Make sure and come back yuh hear !!!...

Well Peter….I have a bit to say about the negative reggae music bombarding the airwaves of the two stations that the young people listen to.
I think the Broadcasting Authority (Ithink that is it..but I could be wrong), which is supposed to police what stations play is asleep. I think on those staions in particular…too much is left to the DJs discretion and there seems to be an emphasis on profitability (via popularity and ratings) over responsibility (doing what is socially and morally correct)
It not only the ZRs but the radio stations have an integral role to play. Radio must entertain, educate and edify at least that is my view. If all we offer young people is music and some music that don’t deserve to play on air…well that contributes to the demise of our society.
On the other hand, in this technological age where music is available on the internet, ipod and can be loaded onto cellphones, it will be a tough job to curtail this trend but we have to start somewhere. Parents also have a serious role to play, so there are a myriad of factors to be considered.
Be that as it may there is no doubt that reggae is the most popular genre of music that plays on the stations most popular among our youth and there needs to be better control so as to ensure that wholesome music is played.
Also…I would like to see more coming out of these consultations in the context of policy implementation and so on..otherwise…as Black Pawn said in the eigties….it is all “Lip Service.”
