That is Batman meaning, the Barbados Association of Tent Managers, our oldest existing entertainment rights organization. On Sunday 3rd June at the blue horizon hotel Batman presented its 3rd annual Calypso Awards ceremony… These awards are presented in recognition of the contribution one would have made to the development of our calypso art form.

This year’s awardees were Calypsonians Terrencia “TC” Coward, Keithroy “Destroyer” Christian, Stedson “RPB” Wiltshire, Madd Entertainment and arranger Keith Ellis. Boyce Voice will present profiles of these persons over the next few days so keep logging on.

The ceremony was attended by National Cultural Foundation NCF Chairman Mr Al Gilkes and Ms Penny Gomez also from NCF. (I must say Penny looked quite fetching, you would not expect some one who worked for the NCF could look so good) Also attending was Ingrid Holder and Merle Niles from United Artistes of Barbados (UAB). The function was organized by Ms Keisha Williams and Sherri Worrell of Supreme Events.

The president of Batman is Mr Sinclair Gittens; he has held that position for over 13 years all together a testimony to his effectiveness. I am proud to be a member of Batman an organization with a history of being in the forefront of fighting for the rights of Calypsonians from back in the eighties. This awards ceremony which Batman hosts every year is evidence of the tangible contribution they continue to make. NCF has been trying for years to remove Batman from the negotiation table because of its effectiveness but they fail clownishly. (Is that a word? Well I just used it so it is one now)

While Batman may be small in numbers it continues to make its voice heard. Two calypso tents that speak make more noise than ten who are silent! So when calypso is in distress, IT’S BATMAN TO THE RESCUE. Congratulations from Boyce Voice to all the awardees.
