John Travolta is a Woman (Hair Spray Review)

What do Eric Lewis ,Peter Boyce and John Travolta have in common? They are all male performers who have dressed as women! Yeah that’s right. I saw the movie Hair Spray this week and it features macho leading man John Travolta in the role of a sizable female named “Edna Turnblad” complete with an outstanding bumper outstanding bosom outstanding everything. Edna would definitely have been a hit with Captain Sawyer you know he likes em “Big an Fat an Thick”.

It was something else to see John Travolta who was so cool and deadly in action movies like “Face Off” “Broken Arrow” and “Swordfish” play a woman married to Wilber played by Christopher Walken. The movie also stars Queen Latifah as Motormouth Maybelle and Nikki Blonsky as Tracey Turnblad the sexiest plus size lady I ever saw, and she can dance too.

Hair Spray is a pretty entertaining movie and it also speaks to serious issues like racial discrimination and discrimination of “plus size” sexy ladies. I saw a review where a critic lambasted the movie and said some parts were insulting to black people. I think it’s a musical and should not be taken overly seriously, like some of the things you read on Boyce Voice.

Travolta would have taken quite a chance deviating from his usual leading man roles to play a woman. John would be quite adept performing in musicals as you would recall if you are old as hell like me, his first movies in the 70’s were “Saturday night Fever” and “Grease” which he starred in with Olivia Newton John. Now he could do a “Grease 2″ and play Olivia’s part too.

After Hair Spray I don’t know if I could ever look at John Travolta the same way again. Not that I ever looked at him mind you, I mean see him playing a macho cool part. At least now I don’t feel so bad for playing that “School Girl Susie” role back in 1990. If it is good enough for John Travolta its good enough for me!

I saw the original movie with Rikki Lake. Hopefully I’ll get a chance to check the new version out (but I’m often disappointed in remakes much like when it comes to music). Hopefully this one will make me enjoy it like when Barry sings Whupatee.
