Gone with the Wind (Part 1) Black Version

If you know me well you would know that I am a movie buff. I have an extensive collection of movies, all originals mind you.
How ever there are still some classic movies that I have not seen and I am trying to catch up. Recently a friend of mines lent me a copy of “Gone with the Wind” so I am going to impose my impressions on you.

“Gone with the Wind” was released in 1939 and won 10 academy awards including best picture and was judged by many to be “the greatest movie of all time”. It is also one the top grossing movies of all times and has been released several times since its original debut.

This movie however, is so racist then, if you want to see black people being stereotyped and cast in subservient positions you can’t beat this “cotton picking” movie. This film was mentioned negatively by both Martin Luthor King and Malcolm X in their biographies and when you see the movie you will see why.

Through out the movie there are numerous scenes where black people are portrayed as inferiors.
There’s a scene where a door bell rings and you see dogs by the door and from between the dogs runs a little black boy to open the door, the message sent in this movie is clear. It’s not like there was some subplot that justified black people being used as “utensils” throughout the movie. They were not “liberated” at the end or any thing, they were just used and that was it.

It could be argued by some that it was an accurate portrayal of conditions of black people back in the old south; I got the impression however, that when it came to the sensibilities of black people, frankly my dear, the movie didn’t give a damn.
