Barbados Music Awards; Nominations Meeting Report

I am a judge in the Barbados Music Awards contest! There I said it, so when the results come out and you are pissed off you cannot curse organiser Ronnie Morris alone, you must have some cursing in there for me too. Last night I attended a judge’s nominations meeting at the Gymnasium where persons from the entertainment industry who had made contributions in the previous year were voted on by a panel of judges.

They made me sign a slip stating I would be sworn to secrecy and could not reveal what occurred at the proceedings, lets see how I can write and still live up to my pledge. I would like to say there was a distinguished panel of judges but can’t because I was there and you know I am not a distinguished kind of guy. The panel consisted of a diverse selection of entertainment persons from various backgrounds in the industry which should help the balance the process. I noticed throughout the proceedings that certain people kept going for snacks on a constant basis so they were not only diverse but licorish as well.

Mix FM radio jocks Malcolm X and Stoke Lee were there, I was trying to disassociate myself from them in an effort to raise my plebian standing in the industry but they kept calling my name. Malcolm said he would be expecting to read something on it in Boyce Voice so hence I am writing this. Teshia Hinds from CBC was sitting behind me and kept hitting me in the back of my head, I would like to accuse her of intimidation but she would probably hunt me down and hit me harder. I have learnt not to say anything bad about CBC when Teshia is around and if I were you I wouldn’t either.

One incident occured where a distinguished entertainment person who is quite “stoute” and an entertainment writer who is a “king” in her own right, got into a verbal exchange which had to be mediated, (that is how they would say it in Pudding and Souse gossip news) but other than that all was well.
I trust that I have been able to write on the judging process with out breaking my secrecy vow. If you would like to give you a clue as to how the nominations went, I would say some people were nominated some were not, some will win and some will not, hope that helps.

My point is the judging panel consisted of Singers, Artiste managers, Producers, Executive Producers, Reporters, Musicians, Radio Announcers, Band Reps, Venue Owners and more. So if you start cursing when you hear the winners you cannot blame the “Timeless” who host the event, the industry itself does the choosing so you would have quite a bit of cursing to do.

Do remember that Timeless Entertainment is responsible for the composition of the panel. It is they who invite persons to be members of the panel. It is this panel that should be scrutinised and the relationship to those who ended up being nominated. Then the objectiveness of the panel can be assessed. For example, if a panel member has a publishing deal with a nominee, this is a problem. If a panel member legally represents a nominee, this is a problem. If a panel member has a direct financial interest in a nominee’s future, then this is a problem. Barbados is small, yes, and everybody is rubbing shoulders. Therefore, the process has to be evaluated accordingly (with a pinch of salt or a dash of pepper). Getting an entirely neutral panel in such a small place with the appropriate knowledgeof the industry and its ‘players’ would be very difficult. It appears the politics of inclusion has been used, and clearly the net has missed some people. If anyone can think of a better process however, now is the time to suggest/re-suggest it.

These music awards are not based on merit and its all political. How can you have a company that owns publishing/ manufactures/and distrbutes artists on a panel??????????
Also managers and promoters!! Some artists are winning awards that dont even have a cd farless a website…..
    Garbage.
