A Real Caribbean Bank Experience

Take a look at the pictures above; you would never guess where those were taken…You see landship ladies and costume vendors and you are thinking this is probably at one of those events like Plantations Bajan Roots and Rhythms dinner show. Well you would be wrong, this was the scene at First Caribbean Bank in Rendezvous Christ Church as they hosted customer appreciation day yesterday.
When I stepped into the Bank I was sort of lost. It looked like the bank had been taken over by cane cutters and market vendors, I thought maybe a robbery was in progress. Then I saw what appeared to be a Kadoment female reveler in a Power by Four costume coming out of the vault that added even more to my confusion. It’s pretty easy for me to get confused for as you know I am pretty ignorant. I didn’t know whether to put my hands in the air and hand over my wallet or start dancing.
When I got to my bank teller friend she explained to me that for customer appreciation day First Caribbean had taken on an independence theme and so all the Bank employees were dressed representing various Bajan characters and vocations.
Hence there was a Mother Sally, calypsonian, a dreadlocked Rastafarian and a male teller was walking about in straw hat jean pants and slippers as a cane cutter, there was not a tie anywhere to be seen, Asiba would have been proud. Instead of taking out my phone to call the police, I took it out and started snapping pictures.
I told my teller friend I felt over dressed, if I had known I would have worn my Ali Singh costume to the bank that day. Let me not forget to tell you that this was all done to the accompaniment of 100% Bajan music! Gems like Cheryl Hackett’s “Beautiful and Unspoilt” Carolyn Leacock, Richard Stoute, Fern Trail, Lord Radio all emanated from the bank’s sound system.
(I noticed they did not play rassole Madd but let’s not address that) It was a truly unique Bajan banking experience, I am sure any tourist who visited the Bank that day would have been thrilled. I know I was and I live here. Now that was what you call a real “First Caribbean” Bank, they should do it more often.

Busy Caribbean Bank Workers

Cricket was also included, I feel she would improve the performance of the west indies team

My Banker Friend Yvette

I thought Nurse Betty was quite fetching so my hand shook when I think took the photo, I felt the need to get sick and have my temperature taken..

Very Proud indeed
Way to go !
Now this is what I am talking about !
It can be more than a costume though
It should be adapted into national wear
We need a national dress (code)
We need to embrace Barbadian culture and stop mimicking Europeans.
Nuff Respect
