Entertainment and Politics; the Cruical Factors
Khiomal, Edwin and Krosfyah performing to thousands at the DLP Luciano event.
“TWO OF THE MOST significant aspects of the campaigning for last Tuesday’s general election were the major role played by entertainers and their music, and the mobilization of the youth, particularly first-time voters.”
The above quote is taken from the nation newspaper editorial of January 19th 2007 which supports and reinforces the point Boyce Voice has been making in my last few posts. The crucial factor entertainment played in the results of last week’s election.
Now mind you I am not saying that entertainment was the ONLY factor which influenced the election results. I know some of you are saying “entertainers could help change a government? Boyce you could only be igrunt”. That’s why you are not a Prime Minister yuh idiot! Also playing major roles was revelations of $75,000.00 cheques, Hardwood and “biting” issues. (not that the biting had any thing to do with the “hardwood”).
Let’s look closely at the different entertainment factors…..
The multiplicities of DLP jingles which were in heavy rotation on the radio featuring people like Kimberley Inniss, Kidsite even Smokey Burke. (we mentioned Lil Rick already)
The convincing radio ads produced and scripted by Janette Layne Clarke featuring Pampalam theatrical and comedic talent. Kevin Hinds from Madd was MC at DLP shows and also endorsed David, Adrian Clarke’s effective live contribution when he performed at the Haynesville show along with Jabae and Spin Pooch Ink etc.
Boyce from Bacchanal Time/Madd fame coordinated local entertainment talent for DLP shows and was also responsible for radio and television marketing of same events. Having political events which featured major Jamaican acts like Luciano and Freddy McGregor to bring the masses out, entertain and influence them. The BLP had first scoffed and critised these events but when they started to be effective they too hastily “convened” a show in an attempt to regain lost ground, but by then it was too late.
The above factors show the POWER of the entertainment industry and we should not be afraid to say it.
Credit must also go to political strategist Hartley Henry who combined all the relevant factors that put the DLP on the path of victory.

Me in photo with Luciano and Mikey General, eat your heart out yuh idiot!

The entertainment industry has, is & will always be a MAJOR factor in any aspect of society, it’s just a matter of those who don’t believe so to come to grips with it or be left in the dark. Simple. Music is the universal language and through it, any message can be conveyed to any sector of society at anytime. It’s just a matter of perfect timing.

Are you aware that in Ameslan – or Sign Language – that both index fingers touching and thumbs also matching is the “word” for VAGINA? If you do not believe me, ask Shellayne Marshall, she taught me that and laughs hysterically every time she sees them done!
