One Route or Two?
One of the innovations which was announced at the recent Crop Over Breakfast launch was the addition of another kadooment route.
As you would know for the past umpteen years the traditional route for costume bands and revelers on kadooment day was from the National Stadium to the Spring Garden.
From this year however, the bands on coming out of stadium they will split to the left and right of Combermere School and proceed along separate routes. They will then rejoin back up at by Eagle Hall and then proceed together down to Spring Garden.
What do you think about the splitting of the route?
A friend of mine who regularly goes down to Trinidad carnival expressed this concern.
He said that unlike Trinidad, Barbados does not have massive costume bands and to split them on the route would even more diminish their visual impact and take away from the Spectacle of Kadooment.
On the other hand splitting the bands might lead to a more manageable and safer event where the police might be happy and revelers have more fun.
What do you think? One route or Two?
If during the reading of this blog there is any thing I might have written which might have incensed or offended you, GET OVER IT! Two routes? So one gine down Glendairyside an de odda spooners hill?
My biggest problem would be with the organization of it. Will they let the bands know prior to the day which route they will be taking or will the organizers just wait til the day of and see who gets in what order on stage and then point them in a direction? Cause if thats the case onlookers may be upset cause if I want to see a certain band on the road how I supposed to know which route they taking at the last minute?
On the other hand two routes opens up the market for more sidewalk entreprenuers to make some money
oh and ya gotta mek sure the join up spot at eagle hall dont become a bottle neck.

This is a stupid idea as it will take away from the visual impact of the carnival. Pointless!

April 23rd, 2008 at 1:44 pm
what is the reason for splitting the route
give us the rationale
is this why colin spencer resigned /
is it that he cant handle the diffrent directions

Fellas, I think the splitting of the route is a bundle of crap. We have s good thing going in crop over and it would appear that ther’s an attempt to take this successful process backwards.’
Peter I am supporting asiba on this one……wuh happen that colin spencer abruptly resign from the ncf board????

Lets be objective here…how will two routes take away from the visual impact of the festival? Nonsense. How will it take the successful process backwards? Nonsense.
You all just don’t like change and you don’t respect history.
Trinidad has been doing this for over a 100 years and they have MANY routes…read: MANY ROUTES.
The visual impact will only be lost to those along the Station Hill route as they would not see the full contingent but they WILL STILL SEE. Why should anybody or place have a MONOPOLY on visual live Kadooment. For my part next time I would like to see a procession going pass the Lumber Company and turning left by Tyrol Cot to Tudor Bridge and Eagle Hall!
Innovations are part of Festivals and Trinidad and the islands have seen a lot of changes some favourable and unfavourable. Don’t even talk about the Calypso Competion…I could give you a whole chapter and verse on the changes.
Changes are a part of Music Festivals to stop staleness and maintain dynamism.

I am not putting a plug for any Govt becuz the former NCF brought changes too. I am all for Experimentation and Innovations.
Re: Colin Spencer, his resignation could come from a level of frustration in not seeing his suggestions acknowledged. I am speculating here but he is a committed and passionate kind of guy who doesn’t like being made futile and the elections have resulted in CropOver preparations a little late with certain personnel in stronger strategic areas than others….lets just see how everything pans out after this season.

First of all, it is clear the there are not enough Costume Bands for it to work effectively. One only has to view the Mas Bands coming across the stadium track to see how scantly many of the Bands are. They lack the number of revelers need for this two thing to be viable. Last year I believe we had about 20 or 22 Mas Bands. Now envision 10 or so Mas Bands going in 2 routes and God forbid one route gets mainly the scanty bands (small band members). Let me see what you think about it then.
Secondly, it is not a matter of which route has a monopoly in terms of seeing the Mas Bands. That is irrelevant since folks come from all over Barbados to view Kadooment. And they find their way to the place or location that suits them as far as a vantage point is concert.
So, will the public be notified as to where their favorite band will be headed or route taken. Or at the last minute word comes the Mas Band is on route 2 and the spectators then have to burn speed to the other location, maybe missing them completely. Moreover, shall the masses all bottle neck at Eagle Hall to see all the bands, which by then have dissipates by numbers and half costumed.
Simply put we do not have ENOUGH Mas bands to pull it off. At this moment it is a silly idea.

barbados
you do have a point there
i did not think about that at all
April 25th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
Well..I dont see the reason for the spilt, but I would leave room open for experiments to improve the crop over season

Other islands have done this with the SAME amount of bands.Trinidad have done it with LESS in the past. History defeats your point BarbadosInFocus. Change will always meet with challenges thats needs to be overcome.
I jumped from the Stadium past Station Hill down the bridge by the four crossroad thru Welches to the bottom of Govt Hill thru Belleville to Culloden Road past Dalkeith to the Garrison….and it CHANGED. I remember Bridgetown Market in Broad Street…and it changed.
In Trinidad i jumped with Charlie’s Roots and suddenly the band TURNED THRU AN AVENUE AND WENT THEIR OWN ROUTE to end up by Mas Camp Pub in WOODBROOK.
I always felt that our Festival was too rigid, too organised at times…I like sponaiety but in the absence of it,I LIKE THE TWO ROUTES…lets see how it goes and cease the usual Bajan suspicion/pessimism with CHANGE.

The whole mindset which we approach the Festival is so different from our sister islands and Trinidad. We approach it with criticism, pessimism, favouritism. (Hey Asiba sounds like a calypso: too much Isms in we Festival…i might sing it,yuh) While the rest approach it with optimism and open arms cause it represents HAPPINESS and FUN to them.
It also represents an opportunity to make MONEY for them and we have not yet embraced the concept of the Festival being a time for all to make a little something.
The two routes creates more opportunity for everybody and i welcome it.

there will be ‘STILL TOO MUCH FAT ON THE ROAD’ whether or not there is
one route, two route or three routes, i cant really coment on the two routes situation because it was kinda of sudden to me
maybe i not in the know like before
i usually walk the route and sell CDs so i will have to devise a plan to cover both routes -e.g. go up one and come down the other
May 24th, 2008 at 1:59 pm
LOLOL @ asiba-the buffalo soldier last statement…Why not start it at 8 instead of 9,why not let the bands come down bush hall instead of out by the prison side i mean leave the stadium and come down by the lights it would be a lil bit shorter…
