The Cursing of Wendy Burke

I just came off the telephone cursing Wendy Burke, I know it was Sunday and a religious day and I should have held my tongue but when I saw the headline in the newspaper I could not resist the temptation.
I called Wendy Nation Reporter and did a “Dwayne Grazzette”, (well it was not as bad as a “Dwayne” but I was pretty acerbic).

In today’s newspaper there is a headline “Cavalcade First Cook Up draws hundreds”….
“Hundreds? I could not believe my freaking eyes!! Hundreds?
Was Wendy Burke the writer of the article at the same event I was at? where “THOUSANDS” of people had gathered to witness the unofficial inaugural event of the festival.
It was close to ten thousand people at that event and I am not saying that because I coordinated it, that is the truth.
Wendy pointed out to me that when you read the article it says there was over “fifteen hundred strong” people there which therefore says its thousands.  When you read the article it is good other wise and speaks to how smoothly the show went with its timely start and finish and the high standard of entertainment.
But the headline throws it off and is damaging and misleading, I know Wendy has no control over the headline as it is selected by the editor.
But I still feel the word “hundreds” should not have been used in the article at all.
Do you see my headline “the Cursing of Wendy Burke”? My article supports it because I am saying I cursed her.
Note to the Nation editor; your headline needs to be congruent with the content of your article.
The fact is that on Friday night was the biggest Cavalcade launch they ever had; I was informed of that by a reliable NCF source.
Don’t take my word for it; ask Kidsite or any body that was there.
And don’t take my word that I called Wendy Burke and cursed her, when you see her ask her and she will tell you I cursed her to kingdom come.

P.S; I had to text her back and wish her happy Mother Day afterwards…

I live within walking distance of the N C F

I can attest to the fact that they were thousands of people at the carpark. the same carpark where we have been playing cricket since about 1982, the year of Carifesta. Many Barbadian and West Indies cricketers have honed their skills on this ground. I can never forget Tino Best -a little thing- holding a bat, talking nuff and giving older fellas bare talk. Tino’s great uncle Carlisle Alonza Best brought Tino. The rest is history—–and this was just a bit of history

This car-park is accustomed to crowds of people and certainly on Friday night there were THOUSANDS of people there. When I arrived at seven o’clock there were 10 people there. I said to David and Camoul that I expected to see more people at that time but Camoul said to me that bajans come out late. By nine o’clock what Camoul said was true—real people , nuff people —THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE IN THE CARPARK-

I felt like cursing her too i admit….imagine over 5000 people and the newspaper reports saying 1500. 1500? 1500 is the George st Audoritium at maximum! WTF IS THIS!

The problem i have with the print and electronic media re CropOver is maturity. A Festival needs to be hyped up and promoted POSITIVELY…i HAVE ALWAYS HELD THIS POSITION regardless of who were the power brokers of CropOver.

I would also to suggest to Peter Boyce as a member of the CBC Board of Management and a stakeholder in CropOver to ensure the stupid negative behaviour of Admiral and John KING DOES not prevail at CBC while we have Dennis Johnson (of Trini influence) promoting CropOver POSITIVELY.

Nowhere in the West Indies (or the World) would you have thousands of people loving the offerings of Pong and Contone and radio personalities singling out them for criticism.
IT SHOWS THAT WE DO NOT UNDERSTAND HOW TO PROMOTE A FESTIVAL BECAUSE IT IS THE WORKS OF THESE GUYS THAT ARE KEEPING THE FESTIVAL ALIVE!

Whether you like guys like Pong amnd Contone and Lil Rick or not the reality is thousands love their works and the festival is kept alive as a result of this.

I remember an interview with Shadow and they asked him about the young entertainers like Machel etc and he stated plainly this is their time and they keep the industry going.

    Wait.
You seriously comparing Machel to Pong & Contone.
Everybody has a role to play in the festival, but surely that comparison is a bit of a stretch

LOL LOL this is the first time that I am reading the blogs and I am pissing myself with laughter. I attended the Calvacade and thought that I was early. Boy was I wrong. I drove around and around and coulnt find a park. In the end I had to beg a man to let me park on his lawn and he agreed. After I walked for about 5 minutes to get the NCF carpark I had to ask my collegue if we were at the right place. People were about like ANTS. I kid you not!! I had to say this was the BIGGEST turnout to the NCF Calvacade Launch & I have been to all!! MORE THAN 6000 in attendance by far!!!

You can compare Machel to Pong and Contone. In the Trini context, Machel keeps the carnival alive…and in the Barbados context, Pong and Contone does the same. Now comparing the two re quality is a totally different matter……

But both make they respective listening audiences happy with their material.
