Crop Over Thanks Giving Church Service Report

Me in Church beside Norman Barrow of A&B Music

I am where you should be on Sunday morning, not where I always am but should be, that is in church.

I have made the long trek down to St Lucy Parish Church to participate in the Crop over 2008 thanks giving service.
Minister of Culture Blackette, NCF Chairman Knight, Senator and Culture P.S Sandiford, NCF CEO and staff every one is here.

Rev Goodridge Preaching

The preacher presiding is the Rev Curtis Goodridge he gave quite an engrossing sermon which I am sure captivated the government officials present. Especially when he said the Ncf should take some of the money it makes from Crop Over and give a bonus to the sugar workers, if Ncf people were sleeping that would have woken them up.
The sermon was concise and effective but they had you singing a million hymns, of which I enjoyed one, the one “Beautiful words, wonderful words, wonderful words of life” that song hard!
Here’s a word of caution health wise, this church uses incense in its worship which while aromatically pleasing to some could present a challenge to those with breathing afflictions aka asthma.

I enjoyed the Crop Over poem presented by the children and the performance of Sister Marshall who encouraged us to “walk holy”.

Sister Marshall singing “Walk Holy” I almost got up and danced

All in all it was interesting religious event and I want to thank St Lucy Parish church for tolerating Crop Over “sinners” like me into their fold.

In closing please note that when it was broadcasted on CBC TV later that evening and I seemed to be texting on my phone in all the shots, it was because I was writing this post for you sinful lot, May the lord bless you and have a good day.

On Trini’s Headlining Bajan Events

I have been observing with keen interest the furor over the government’s statement of being committed to Bajan talent for Crop Over.

Government stated that they could not allow a situation to occur where foreign acts would be brought here to headline our premiere Crop Over events over local acts. So what the ass is the matter with that? That is a government policy we should applaud and as artistes we should be jumping with joy when we hear it.

I know you will start saying “Boyce you working with the NCF doing Cavalcades now and you supporting them” . That is not true, my position was always the same.

The Boyce position was well ventilated in several posts I wrote in 2007 including a famous Open the gates my ass where I cursed the previous administration over not only having a Trinidad act headlining our Party Monarch show but a radio ad with the Trini inviting us to our own Bajan national event.

Also last year the previous government had their ass royally kicked whem they had a Cohobblopot which featured Jamaican, Mr. Vegas causing the event to be scorned by the public who chose to attend the competitive 100% Bajan event “Euphoria” instead.

So without any reservation we need to applaud and endorse the stated government policy to highlight our Bajan entertainers during our Crop over season.

St Lawrence Gap “Dead Quiet”

????????Business All is quiet in the gap, Dead quiet

No music after 3 am.

That’s the rule of law now being enforced in St Lawrence Gap. This stretch of road home to several night clubs and has a reputation for partying until the break of dawn, has had its partying wings clipped.

Is it coincidental that such a hard line enforcement of such a rule should materialise on the eve of our Crop Over season?

This is sure to have an extremely negative effect at a peak time when visitors will be flocking to our shores looking for places to frequent and experience our crop over music.

The point is made that not only the gap has nightclubs but also have resident house holds and hotels who obviously don’t appreciate blaring music up to 4 in the morning when people are trying to sleep.

There must be some balance met in order to settle this ongoing issue of noise in St Lawrence Gap which has been going on for some years.
While the Society for a quiet barbados association celebrates their quiet win the disastrous negative effect on commerce should not be overlooked.

It reminds me of a contribution I made at one of those noise legislation consultation meetings I attended some years ago.
We must be careful how we go about quieting barbados to conform to president of quiet association Carl Moore and his crew who keep so much noise about being quiet.
When you hear a business man say “things are quiet” it is not a good thing.
When we hear “business is dead” that’s even worst, that’s what quiet leads too.
That is what the entertainment venues are experiencing in “the gap” right now… Quiet,
Dead Quiet…
