The Demoltion of Culture

You could not have asked for a better demonstration of the true feelings of government to cultural industries. I am Boycing about the recent demolishing of the unfinished auditorium at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Center to make room for a car park and offices.

They were not just demolishing an auditorium they were demolishing culture.
In an country that is sadly lacking in adequate entertainment venues government while playing lip service to cultural industries is finding time to destroy one.

Why waste money on an auditorium when they can just continue to issue empty promises, like the promise to refurbish the Empire Theatre, I so tired hearing bout that then. Or the promise to fix up Queens Park theatre and reopen it, I don’t know if you can still call them promises, when is it that a promise crosses over and simply becomes a blatant lie. If a fruitless promise is given often and long enough it must be upgraded to a lie.

I didn’t mean to demolish the hopes and dreams of you in the cultural industries; government is doing a good enough job at that.
While government talks the talk it is time they walk the walk, if they are so sincere about the development of culture they need to show prove it.
By demolishing that unfinished entertainment auditorium, government demolishes our hopes and by extension demolishes culture.

Isn’t there a process that have to be followed, before buildings are erected or demolished?
Isn’t there a process in place for citizens & interested Organizations to view the plans & to place their stamp of approval / protest regarding the erection or demolition of buildings?
Don’t survayers make contact with the residents/ business in the general area, to get feedback on how the change will affect them, whether negative or positive? Also get suggestions & ideas from these people?
The Government have to understand that it is the Tax Payer’s money that is used to finance these projects & they are not consulted on how their money is spent.
Peter, how would you like it if my Cousin went into your Bank Account, took your money & started constructing a Disco? Charge you an arm & a leg to go into the Disco that YOUR money build, while Cous living off de High Hogg. Then along comes me, who oust Dearest Cousin from the business, start to knock down a perfect incomplete area of the structure, go into your Bank Account again for YOUR money to rebuild a whole new structure without even consulting you. If you have to enter that structure, you are asked to pay an arm & a leg to do so. I am getting like the Fatted Calf, while you are over worked, under paid & have no uses, until I need your vote, to be elected as Director of the Organization or to RAID my Bank Account.
Would’nt you feel like lickin 2 shots in some body RASS?

    The Demolition Of Culture

They take our hard earn money
Hack it up with V.A.T, Taxes direct and taxes indirectly
Erect buildings that prove to be a waste
Demolish the plans other governments left in place
    Education gets unfettered priority
Millions spent developing a larger University
Only to hand out degrees to masses
    Leaving there with questionable passes
I see some scholars less learnt than me
They can’t make good sentences but have a degree
I see how they dress and hear the music they play
Our young minds have been demolished to influences of the U.S.A
Not enough is done to preserve our creed
Our sons and daughters that sprung from a forefather’s seed
Failure to give any importance as kids are grown
Culture for Barbados is left on its own
Useless authorities and vain promises to revamp structures
Like the Empire and Queens Park Theaters
There is little focus to harvest skills that are ours
Until the young ones make big, then named Ambassadors
Rihanna and Ryan were the most recent of these
Entreat the authorities to abandon The Demolition of Culture please!
