Old Time Favorites Come Back Again

friday-13th-blog-1

Jason strikes again! And so does the remake syndrome

I see that on February 13th 2009, a remake of Friday 13th slashes its way on to our cinema screens, note it is not another sequel as the 13 others before but a remake of the original.

It seems to me that the Hollywood has reach the end of its creative cycle and is finding it increasingly hard to produce any thing new that is good, hence they are going back to the good old classics favorites we grew up with.

Evidence can be seen in the proliferation of remakes which are now being churned out by the tinsel town movie making machinery.

There are so many old movies and TV series that are being remade its amazing, Starsky and Hutch, Knight Rider, Battle Star Galactica, Beverley Hills 90210 and Charlie’s Angels.

They also remade Psycho, the avengers and Mission Impossible; of course some of these remakes were so bad the original should not have been touched at all. (Look what they did to Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho”)

Let’s not forget all the classic songs that are now being sampled and released to a new generation as though they are new.

What is the significance of this? Does this say that in this millennium Hollywood and indeed the world has peaked and reached the end of its creative cycle.

Let’s not forget the new installments of Rocky and Rambo, plus a Terminator 4 is now in production as you read and we have the Terminator TV series.

The entertainment events of our past are now the highlights of our future.

I am sure there are quite a few more remakes you can add that I might have missed and like Arnold they are now promising …..

The “Entertainment Experience”

movie-image

Monday is the night I go to the movies, 8.30 pm the Globe Cinema is the choice of P Boyce.

My Face book friends often query this “strange” behavior “wha I see that movie weeks ago I coulda burn that for you” or  “you could have gone on www see movies free.com and watch that for free on your computer, why you wasting money?”

Well let me tell you why I leave home go to the movies, for the “entertainment experience”.

I enjoy the anticipation of simply “going to de theatre” looking forward to a night out.

I enjoy viewing the poster displayed outside the cinema promoting the movie which helps to heighten your anticipation of seeing the same film.

I look forward buying my theatre pop corn, hot dog and soda to snack on as I view the flick.

Then the cinema darkens and they pull the curtains the night’s entertainment begins with the “Coming Attractions” wetting your appetite for the flicks to come.

Sometimes the coming attractions are better than the movies them selves.

I love to sit back and view my movies on a big screen and I don’t tell me you got a 60 inch TV, I mean the massive cinema scope larger than life dimensions you get only in the theater.

I love my Dolby stereo and surround sound where the audio brings you into the movie.

It is a total escape, you don’t have your wife telling you the T.V to loud or your kids vex cause they want to use the computer.

You get away from your worries, bills and ringing phones, well if you turn your cell off.

It is the social interaction as you and the audience become as one,

It is entertainment experience that I am after, stop home and view movie down loads on an 18 inch computer screen? I think not!

Happy Holiday from Boyce Voice but wheres the music?

Hope you had an excellent Christmas eating the Ham, Black Cake. Jug Jug and enjoying the things associated with this festive season.
A musical airplay trend that I have noticed in recent years is where radio stations no longer play exclusively Yule tide music in the days leading up to Xmas.
Years ago it was a standard that for the entire month of December it would be 100% Xmas selections that would dominate the radio.
I can speak to this with authority as I remember having a half hour on radio in the 90’s and having to seek permission from the Station Program Manager to play some non yuletide music I wanted to promote.

What is the possible negative impact of this? We here in Barbados don’t have snow and all the weather related characteristics that signal Xmas, the only thing which signifies that is the music. So if you are hearing less Xmas songs you are feeling less in the yuletide spirit which means you less inclined to go out there spending and injecting the much needed money into the economy.

Our retail industry depends on the ambiance generated by songs like “Dreaming of a white xmas” the xmas shoes” song (which I hate) ““little drummer boy” to motivate customers to come out.
A great percentage of the annual store retail sales happen at Christmas, December revenue becomes the savior of many shops and is the reason they exist.
One should then see the possible danger that might develop if we see a trend where less Xmas music is played in December which will equate to fewer retail sales less financial activity and become a possible danger to the economy.

Boyce Voice takes this opportunity to wish you the best of the season!

All Hail Hal Linton

All Hail Mr. Hal Linton!
It’s good to finally seeing a Bajan male finally making impact internationally, I read in the media of Evan Rogers who discovered Rihanna now has his own label “Syndicated Rhythm Production”.
Rogers also stated it’s the Barbadians he has signed to his label that is making him a force to be reckoned with in the international world. Those artistes would be superstar Rihanna, Shontelle Layne and now Hal Linton.
Hal would have been his most recent addition and Rogers said there is extreme interest in him from music industry executives.

Linton has already been a winner four times at our Barbados Music Awards, Song of the year, best new artiste, song Writer of the year and R and B single of the year. The song that put him on the map is “Cardiac Arrest” which we are featuring below.

I wrote a post in February querying if a Bajan male singer would need to have a sex change and become a woman in order to attract the attention of the international world. http://www.boycevoice.com/blog/2008/02/03/i-want-to-be-a-woman/
Hal Linton was one of the talented males I mentioned that was deserving of world wide recognition.
In fact now that I think, it’s probably Boyce Voice that brought the attention of the world to Hal.
In which case we are probably deserving of some commission or something, I’ll get Evan’s cell number and give him a call…

In the mean time click below and view Hal performing “Cardiac Arrest” as we celebrate him making it internationally.

Hats Off to St Philip Carnival Committee

Congratulations are in order of the organizers of the recently concluded successful St Philip carnival! If I wore a hat I would take it off to them but I don’t.
The successful and efficient organizing of this event by the St Philip Committee s not an activity that should go unnoticed by the powers that be.

Often the question is asked when will the staging of Crop Over be able to be placed into the hands of the private sector.
Government needs to take its place as a facilitator empowering the entrepreneur to thrive and reach their full potential.

What entities in the private sector have the capability to efficiently coordinate the multiplicity of mammoth tasks and events which constitute our national festival?
The St Philip Carnival Committee is an example of the answer to the question.

Chances are if you can organize a carnival parade successfully in St Philip you should be able to do the same only on a bigger scale in St Michael where Kadooment takes place.

Efforts should made by Government to nurture and groom this St Philip committee who are obviously pregnant with potential to be a major event coordinator player in our Crop Over.

congrats to the St Philip Group on not depending on the government but getting up off their asses and not only staging their own event but doing it successfully!

Boyce is leaving the computer……

American Media on Rihanna “Malicious and Dangerous”

The American media is so rassole malicious then, according to Kidsite  “malicious and dangerous”
Take a look at what on the internet news and is now being circulated like mad by the American Media

Is Rihanna Pregnant?
Posted in: Celebrity News

Rumors have started to swirl that Rihanna is pregnant–which is entirely unsurprising. Belly bumps are fuel enough, so actual fainting is like a high alert in the celebrity world! MediaTakeOut.com had an interesting scoop that a certain celebrity weekly mag (or maybe a couple) will be releasing news of Rihanna’s pregnancy, and guess what?
“It gets better. According to one of our snitches at the mag, Rihanna is reportedly planning on keeping the child.”
It’s also rumored that Rihanna and her boyfriend Chris Brown will be headed to Barbados next week to visit Rihanna’s parents, which could very possibly mean that a baby announcement is on the way.

The American media are so gipsy then. They worst than Pearlie and Sousie put together,  They make our Pudding and Souse gossip column look tame, at least that “souse” drop hints with out being blatant.
It must be so horrible for Rihanna to live under a microscope where every aspect of your is displayed in public and a malicious media. They are not even sure if there is even a baby but reporting that Rihanna is planning to keep it.  If they were to feel she was planning to get rid of it they would report that too.
I read an article where they discussed the dress Rihanna was wearing at the last awards might be to hide her delicate condition and the camera would not go in for a close front shot of her on purpose.
The Media already know the father of Rihanna’s hypothetical baby is Chris Brown and when he is traveling to Barbados to give the news to the Grand Parents.

They need to get a life, or go home and check and see who is pregnant by their own house and who the father is.
As Kidsite say “they too malicious and dangerous” and Madd Ali Singh lyrics “Mind yuh own, mind yuh own business”

Call me Pastor Boyce

I have seen the light! Soon brothers and sisters you will be referring to me as Pastor Peter Boyce !!

I have become convinced that we in the entertainment industry are in the wrong business, while we get on stage singing wuck up songs and telling nasty jokes for little or no rewards, I have noticed that church pastors have been preaching the good word of the lord reaping financial sweets and getting through licking.

When you look the newly refurbished “Power in the Blood” Church just completed in Tudor Bridge you will see what i mean. Feast your eyes on the fancy architecture and the massiveness of the structure, that’s got to be close to a million dollars in building, plus they own two other properties on the same stretch of road.

When was the last time you saw an entertainer make enough money to build an auditorium?
All the years our entertainers still renting venues from government and others, hoping they refurbish the Empire theatre so we could rent some more. That is why we need to see the light!

Entertainment promoters invest thousands of dollars into high risk shows trying to get people to come out.
Then when we do get an audience we got to pay vat and taxes.
Churches don’t have to advertise to get their congregation and the financial contributions they collect are tax and vat free.

You know another way the goodly men of the cloth get out? Women! That’s right, all those church ladies with problems who go to their pastors seeking counselling looking for a shoulder to cry on, their pastor gives them that comforting shoulder and other additional body parts too, soon he is pumping salvation into their souls.
Look how often salacious Pastors are in the news with some sex charge (will not call Jippy’s name) We entertainers must take a back seat to them, We need to see the light!

Don’t think that I am being bad minded and criticizing the church and priests; in fact I am admiring them.
That’s why I done with this wuckless singing  and joke telling, I am  turn over a new leaf and become Pastor Boyce. I have seen the light and you need to see it too…

Kingsley Thorne 2008 Hits and Miss Fashion Review part 2

Kingsley Thorne is at it again, as he was not cursed enough because of his first review he is man enough (shut up madman) to release a part 2 to his fashion list.

He made the mistake of stepping on Ian Bourne’s corn and is now being blasted in the Bajan Reporter blog see link below.

http://bajanreporter.blogspot.com/2008/11/barbadian-designer-thinks-two-lottery.html

Now Thorne would know the meaning of “let sleeping dogs lie” not that I am calling Bourne a dog or any thing, he would have to be a cat as that’s his favorite animal.

My PBoyce Half Hour made the grade which by the way is heard every Saturday Morning on Hott 95.3 FM at 9.30. You should tune in its quite hilarious.

With out any further ado heres part 2 of the Thorne List

Captain Sawyer; Well and Done!

Yesterday I visited calypsonian Captain Sawyer in the hospital and he is doing well.
Well as fine as he can be considering he is still in hospital.
In case you did not know Sawyer experienced severe chest pains while at the scene of a fire where his friend Chares Griffith’s house was burning.
Sawyer had to be rushed to the hospital to while his friend Charles who had been wheel chair bound subsequently succumbed to his injuries and passed away.

When I visited him yesterday Sawyer was physically ok but very much reflecting on what had transpired.
He was saddened not only by the passing of his friend but also the manner in which he had died.
Sawyer then made a definitive statement, he said because of the experience he had been through he was now giving his life to the lord and would no longer be singing calypso. He would not be singing with the gospel “Experience tent”, nor writing for anyone, he was just done!
Sawyer asked for me to make that announcement hence I am making it to you.
We at Boyce Voice would like to wish the best to Captain Sawyer we hope he gets better soon and we applaud his decision to make a positive change in his life.

Captain Sawyer will be missed by the calypso fraternity but what is our loss is the Lords gain.
Sawyer says he welcomes visitors and you can find him in ward C4 of the queen Elizabeth hospital.
