The Bag Controversy

The Perennial Red Plastic Bag

Have you been hearing all the heehaw and debate that has been occurring because the National Cultural Foundation decided to honour Red Plastic Bag for the contribution he made to calypso?

Things like this get me sort of lost, how can that be misconstrued as a bad thing?
How can local calypsonians be complaining because a local calypsonian is being honored?
So what if Bag is in the competition this year does that in some way negate the contribution he has made to calypso over the years?
If the NCF were to honour Trinidadian calypsonian Shadow or wait till Machel came down here and honored him I would see why people would have a problem with that.

Red Plastic Bag would have revoloutionised Bajan calypso when he started in 1982, with hits such as “Mr Harding” “They Publish it” “can’t find me brother” and more.
He is a perennial calypso stalwart who not only could win a calypso crown back in 1982 but in 2007 and possibly 2008.
If Red Plastic Bag can’t be honored for the contribution he has made to calypso in this country, then who can be?

The pugnacious and vehement discourse which has erupted from NCF’s decision to honour “Bag” is a reminder of one of the songs he wrote that I mentioned above, the fact that some people don’t just “publish-it they “talk it” as well.

“8 Cent” Ronnie Morris CD Now Out

ronnie-morris-cd-cover-2008-email.jpg

Hello People, Today we will take a break from cussing and check out this new CD that has recently been released, Ronnie Morris sent me this photo and media write up which I will now publish for your entertainment edification.

My comments on above picture; what’s with the shirt off thing Ronnie? do you realise you do not have any muscles? It might help that when you go for a shirtless look like this that you have some muscularity within the vicinity, example look at this picture of 50 cents…

50-cent-pictures-75.jpg

See the difference? This is how you should look when you take your shirt off Ronnie, so as it relates to muscles if we were comparing you to 50 cents, we would have to call you 8 cents Ronnie!

While he might be 8 cents in muscularity, Ronnie is rich as it relates to talent, here is his overview of his CD Album which is now out, watch for an audio release on Boyce Voice soon..

“Ronnie Morris’ self-titled 6-track album is officially in stores islandwide! The album boasts new material from the young singer, including the Deepu-Panjwani-produced “More”, a lush remake of the DeBarge classic “In A Special Way” which he performed at the 2008 Barbados Music Awards, and the Brad Griffith and Sebastian Llegall-produced reggae scorcher “Send Me A Love”, which is sure to ignite regional radio. Also featured on the album are Deception, More Than Words and Remember When It Rained, all high-quality tracks in keeping with the output of this award-winning recording and performing artiste. The album is available islandwide for just $25! Go get your copy today!

And that’s the end of the release from 8 cent Ronnie…..

K B Kleen Apologises

My beloved Barbados. I am a tried and true professional in the entertainment business for over 25 years.

Last night at the tribute to Rihanna (On Feb 21st 2008)I realize that some of my comments and actions may have offended some of you. Comments that may have been misinterpreted to be disrespectful of rank or position could have been unclear.

Let me state that I have the highest regard for the Right Hon. David Thompson, the Prime Minister and leader of our great Nation and, at any point, would do nothing to destroy the relationship we have developed since our school days at Combermere.

Last night, just after the PM’s arrival I may have called him David due to fact that I am so familiar with him as an individual. However, when it came to formal introductions, I did indeed refer to the Prime Minister with clear and proper protocol and regard.

At this time , let me seize the opportunity to apologize to Barbados, special guests and our new Ambassador, Rihanna and anyone I may have offended.

“Rihanna eats her own cake even if you are Chris Brown”

I met a lady yesterday who screamed at me “Boyce Voice yuh Rihanna Freak!”If you check almost all the stories on the site right now are about Rihanna, and for good reason too.

Plus out of the 10 most popular posts I have written 7 were on Rihanna including my famous Exclusive Interview with Rihanna which is my number one most read post.
I tried to get close to Rihanna recently for another interview but apparently security had been warned and I was apprehended, that’s why I had Ingrid taking pictures.
I also tried to be included in the airport welcoming party but was denied access by event organiser Phil Philips, acting no doubt under advice from Interpol, the FBI and Police Commissioner Darwin Dottin.

Despite these legal challenges, I endeavor to continue to pursue Rihanna disregarding the “stalking” charge which was recently made against me.

I felt sorry for her being accompanied by people like Chris Brown when I know she would prefer to be with the Boyce. Enough said!

Tomorrow I will be dropping a Hot story that will not be about Rihanna but about new developments in the local cultural industry. LOG ON THEN…

Want to thank all of you for logging on and making yesterday the highest number of hits since we have been running Boyce Voice.

Cultural Ambassador Rihanna and Chris Brown in Barbados

Wow that was quite a show last night! The Tribute to Rihanna musical celebration.
All the honour and gifts Rihanna received and deservedly so, including her being designated the distinguished title of Honorary Youth and Cultural Ambassador to Barbados by the Prime Minister.
Also she received a plot of land a jeep and was entertained by dynamic local acts.
Surprise guest last night was a special appearance by American singer Chris Brown who had the ladies screaming.
Here are some exclusive and candid photos compliments Ingrid taken last night.

The local acts last night were excellent and a credit to Rihanna, Starcom radio News dept telephoned during the broadcast to say that people were calling the station and complaining on some aspects of MC KB Kleen’s presentation.
The job of Master of Ceremonies is never an easy one, “space filling” and keeping things on track can sometimes be a challenge.

Happy Rihanna Day; Her Grammy Performance

You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this YouTube video

I heard radio station CBC 98.1 FM promoting today as “Rihanna Day”! I thought it was not only a cool idea but appropriate as well as she is flying into Barbados today to attend the special tribute show that is being put on in her honor.

It is note worthy that “Rihanna Day” is also being sponsored by A & B Sounds which is an example of a local entertainment corporate entity coming to the fore in support of a fellow artiste. Way to go Norman Barrow of A & B!

Therefore, in keeping with the spirit of the Rihanna Day, Boyce Voice presents Rihanna’s performance at the 2008 Grammy awards. Here she is performing with “The Time” of the 1984 Prince movie “Purple Rain”.

I like the concept of merging a classic group like “The Time” with a current star like Rihanna, that was an interesting combination, Click and watch it again and watch for when she shouts “Barbados we got one!”

Bajan Words for Rihanna Haters

I mentioned some negative comments about Rihanna which were made on the net here are some after which I will put my Boyce Voice retort.

Net Comments: Her hair is horrible…

I totally love this song but that stupid bitch is not humble at all…

Well to u…she may be nothing but to Barbadians she is…

she f–king ruined the times performance what the f–k.

Me again, check out the beautiful Rihanna in her three Grammy outfits

rihanna-dresses-at-grammys.jpg

Now here’s what some freaky ass dress critic said,

“Bold-y Locks and the Three Scares: Rihanna’s trio of Grammy outfits can be classified as the good (comparatively speaking, at least), the bad and the fugly. Let’s start with the helmet-headed, neon-nailed singer’s red-carpet look, a ruffled, electric blue Zac Posen creation that’s suffering from too much clutter on top, a weak force of gravity on the bottom and an excessively molting Cookie Monster underneath. Rihanna sticks with both Posen and the plumage for her onstage performance (heck, she even wears her hair in a ducktail), styling what appears to be a bale of hay dive-bombed by some irate ostriches” …. etc etc blah blah”

Boyce Voice response to All Rihanna Haters; At least Rihanna is wearing rassole clothes unlike some of the U.S stars who have a habit of parading around and making their privates public, (I will not call Britney Spears name, I wanted to post Britney’s “privates” picture but Darron wouldn’t let me).

At least Rihanna is neither in rehab nor suffering a mental breakdown like some of those freaky druggy mad ass stars you have out there. (Will not call Britney’s name).

At least Rihanna remembered all the words to her songs in her Grammy performance, remembered her dance moves and did not go on stage in her underwear. (Britney again)

I would like to tell you to kiss Rihanna’s ass but that would be granting you a privilege. What you should do is kiss Britney’s next time you see her, chances are it will be exposed. U leff Rihanna fuh we! (Get a Bajan to translate that for you yuh f—king* idiot)

* freaking idiot ok?

Watch out for special “Rihanna Day” post tomorrow…

Tribute to Rihanna in Barbados

rihanna-holding-grammy.jpg

By now you should have heard about the Celebration Show “Tribute to Rihanna” which will be staged on Thursday in Independence Square Bridgetown. Our Grammy winner Rihanna will be right here in Bridgetown Barbados yuh idiot!

It is quite possible you might not have heard. From a marketing perspective it seems to have been a little low keyed. I would expect there would probably be more promotion of the event over the next two days.

Rihanna will receive a rousing welcome at the airport by a delegation headed by Prime Minister David Thompson and members of Government. An entertainment delegation will then afterwards perform FOR Rihanna doing their unique interpretations of her songs.

Some people might feel disappointed that Rihanna is not performing, but cheese don bread, de woman has been working like Madd winning her Grammy and promoting Barbados. I think it is great that we should give her the privilege of being a distinguished guest of honor and performing FOR her.

What I think is really great about this event is that they are also honoring Jimmy Haynes who really won Barbados’s first Grammy 22 years ago. Thats really cool of them.

The person behind this event is entertainment marketing specialist Phil Philips. Kudos to him and government for putting an event like this together at short notice.

Performing will be Shontelle, Edwin, Livvi Franc, Kidsite, Arturo Tappin, RPB, Lil Rick, Philip 7, Ayana John, Richard Stoute, Mr Dale and others. The Master of ceremonies will be our KB Kleen and Hurricane.

I received a call from a certain manager who was quite prolific and colorful in his discourse aka cursing. He was quite annoyed his artiste was not in the Rihanna show line up and wanted a rassole answer. Boyce therefore put the rassole question to coordinator Mr. Phil Philips who said “it was no disrespect to artistes but at the short notice the event was put together it was just not possible to have everyone on. Therefore they tried to put on at least one person to represent every genre of music”. Philips said “maybe next time you will be chosen”.

I hope that this satisfies said manager ’cause he can get the place hot with cursing when he is ready. He gets the place like “flames” or like he is one of the “crazy people”. Hows that for puddin and souse hints.

Any ways I invite you to go out and support our own Rihanna, and while Phil says he has all genres he does not have poetry represented, we should have our Khadji present one of his poems to Rihanna, I will send this to Phil.

I would like to think that my cursing post “Support Rihanna you Ungrateful Dogs!” would have had something to do with motivating this event to be put together, I have noticed that I am not part of the welcoming committee, so I might have to curse again.

Boyce is leaving the computer….

Comments on Rihanna; The Good the Bad and the Bajan

I have been checking some of the comments on Rihanna’s Grammy performance which were made on some of the international Internet sites. Some of them contain some very negative and disparaging remarks on our Rihanna.

I had heard about nasty comments made about Rihanna on the net, and expressed surprise as ALL of the comments on Boyce Voice were complimentary and supportive. Even Ian Bourne’s comment was not really negative and he was cussed out by Skyblu anyway.

So I hope Rihanna takes note of the contrasting comments between Bajan Boyce Voice and the other international sites. I have heard Rihanna say she does not get the enough support from Barbadians. When you look at the contrasting comments on Boyce Voice and some of the other sites it tells a different story. Bajans are definitely behind Rihanna 100%. Also we must mention the many poetic tributes to Rihanna written by Khadji which you can find on Boyce Voice and his poet corner site.

There is word circulating of Rihanna performing in a planned celebration show that is to happen in Barbados on Thursday. Boyce Voice will update you on details later.

Super Ingrid

Ingrid outside Grammy Awards Venue representing

We should be proud and thankful to Ingrid for making the effort to travel down to the Los Angeles United States to show support for Rihanna in the 2008 Grammy Awards show.
Ingrid had called me and told me she was going down and I was wondering how she would have fared.

As far as I know Grammys is an invitation only thing even if she got down there how would she get in?
I had visions of Ingrid being thrown unceremoniously on her butt through the venue door.
Ingrid however, being the 100 lbs of resourceful person she is, was able to overcome all obstacles financial and other wise to witness history (like P’Oui said) when our Barbadian girl Rihanna received her award.

Ingrid’s entire trip was being video taped by camerman Alwyn to produce a documentary to hopefully show on our CBC television, I look forward to seeing it. (If you know somebody on CBC board you should put in a word for this production)

ingrid-on-phone-blog-2.jpg

Ingrid on her Bmobile Blackberry phone talking to me, she had best be talking to me…

I asked Ingrid why did she make the effort and she said “I think it is imperative that some sort of Bajan presence be here (Los Angeles) to show support for Rihanna at such a significant time in her career”.

Boyce Voice and all Bajans owe a debt of gratitude to Ingrid for making the effort to represent us and support Rihanna.
Kudos to Super Ingrid!!
