Kudos to all of the performers and producers for doing outstanding work in election campaign jingles, producers like Darron Grant and Nicholas Brancker.
Did you notice all the performers are from Bacchanal Time Calsypso tent? cause we are the best yuh idiot!

Except for Rick but he is in Bacchanal Time so much he is like ours…

Congrats to Hypa Dog Lil Rick from Boyce Voice,
You can take a listen to his winning Jingle here.

P.S; Want to congratulate Ricks manager Santia too, don’t know what she did but congrats.

NCF Bizzness; The New Chairman

ncf-office-outside-blog-pic.jpg

Boyce Voice has been watching the developments at the National Cultural Foundation (NCF) with keen interest and so should you.You should know by now that the NCF Chairman and board recently resigned and I bet you are wondering who the new Chairman will be…..

Well wonder no more, a reliable little birdie told me that the new Chairman of the NCF will be a Mr. Ken Knight and the Deputy Chairman Mr. Colin Spencer. Do you know who Ted Knight is? I don’t, I have never heard of him as it relates to culture, that should mean he might bring an untainted slant to the administration of culture.

Well I have heard of Colin Spencer, ace controversial calypsonian, he usually sings about the government now he will be representing the government as NCF Deputy Chairman.
Colin has a wealth of experience that should serve him well in this new position.
Lets see if our little birdie turns out to be correct, other wise it will be a dead little birdie and I will keep his car.

The position of NCF CEO is what has me worried. I am not hearing that that position is vacant. A little birdie also told me Ian Estwick might be remaining as CEO.  That’s not bad news that’s HORRIBLE news. This is something the Industry needs to take notice of, as you know Estwick has been a bugbearer in our industry for years. How ever in order to get an unbiased opinion on Estwick’s performance, if Peter Wickham can do a poll so can Peter Boyce Voice.

So we invite you to comment on Ian Estwick’s performance as CEO NCF and also vote in the poll. Lets see if we are right about NCF Chairman and Deputy Chairman other wise I will be posting a picture of a dead bird…

Entertainment and Politics; Nation Newspaper Editorial

I previously quoted from it but today Boyce Voice invites you to take a read of the full Nation Newspaper editorial which speaks to the involvement of entertainment in the results of the this month’s general elections.

Entertainers participating in politics and endorsing candidates is not unique to Barbados, it has been an accepted norm for years internationally. Recently Oprah endorsed U.S candidate Obama and it is widely rumored that Frank Sinatra had a hand in the election of John F Kennedy to the Presidency of the United States back in the 60’s.

Speaking of the United States politics I just want to get this comment in, what do you feel is motivating Hilary Clinton to run for President of the United states? Do you think she has seen the perks that the position can bring as experienced by her husband?

If I was Bill I would be careful though, if Hilary were to become President and had to spend late nights at the Oral office I would never really be sure… oops sorry my bad, I meant OVAL office…

Hail Steve Minister of Culture

Steve BlacketteAll Hail Steve Blackette who now takes over as our new Minister of Culture in Barbados.

This announcement was made yesterday by Hon Prime Minister Mr David Thompson. Do you know Steve Blackette? You should. He has been working as a freelance announcer on Starcom Network radio station for some years now, I used to do Madd Half hours shows with him on Saturday mornings, so I know him personally.

When I heard Steve was now Minister of Culture, I was cracking my brain trying to remember if at any time we might have disagreed and I had cursed him, there is nothing worse than when you curse somebody and then they end up as Minister over you.
Fortunately that never happened. Steve was always a very likable chap and was always cooperative when I did shows with him.

If he brings that cooperativeness into his management of the cultural industries I am sure all of us should benefit, if he doesn’t, well then I might have to curse him after all.

All jokes aside, Boyce Voice would like to welcome Steve Blackette as the new Minister of Culture, It will be interesting to see the changes a fresh head administrator will make in this industry. Will the Festival Events Bureau still be taking over the running of Crop Over this year? or will it go back to the National Cultural Foundation (NCF)?

Who will be running the NCF? and whose ass is going to get sent home? All these are questions which need to be answered! What questions or suggestions would you have for the New Minister?

Entertainment and Politics; the Cruical Factors

show-dlp-krosfyah.jpg

Khiomal, Edwin and Krosfyah performing to thousands at the DLP Luciano event.

“TWO OF THE MOST significant aspects of the campaigning for last Tuesday’s general election were the major role played by entertainers and their music, and the mobilization of the youth, particularly first-time voters.”

The above quote is taken from the nation newspaper editorial of January 19th 2007 which supports and reinforces the point Boyce Voice has been making in my last few posts. The crucial factor entertainment played in the results of last week’s election.

Now mind you I am not saying that entertainment was the ONLY factor which influenced the election results. I know some of you are saying “entertainers could help change a government? Boyce you could only be igrunt”. That’s why you are not a Prime Minister yuh idiot! Also playing major roles was revelations of $75,000.00 cheques, Hardwood and “biting” issues. (not that the biting had any thing to do with the “hardwood”).

Let’s look closely at the different entertainment factors…..

The multiplicities of DLP jingles which were in heavy rotation on the radio featuring people like Kimberley Inniss, Kidsite even Smokey Burke. (we mentioned Lil Rick already)

The convincing radio ads produced and scripted by Janette Layne Clarke featuring Pampalam theatrical and comedic talent. Kevin Hinds from Madd was MC at DLP shows and also endorsed David, Adrian Clarke’s effective live contribution when he performed at the Haynesville show along with Jabae and Spin Pooch Ink etc.

Boyce from Bacchanal Time/Madd fame coordinated local entertainment talent for DLP shows and was also responsible for radio and television marketing of same events. Having political events which featured major Jamaican acts like Luciano and Freddy McGregor to bring the masses out, entertain and influence them. The BLP had first scoffed and critised these events but when they started to be effective they too hastily “convened” a show in an attempt to regain lost ground, but by then it was too late.

The above factors show the POWER of the entertainment industry and we should not be afraid to say it.

Credit must also go to political strategist Hartley Henry who combined all the relevant factors that put the DLP on the path of victory.

Entertainment and politics; the Lil Rick Factor

rick-dems-shirt-shot-blog.jpg

With out doubt it can be stated that elements of the entertainment industry were a crucial factor in the election of David Thompson as Prime Minister of Barbados.

Let’s discuss this with particular focus on “The lil Rick Factor”. Rick with his Guinness radio Rush hours and popular DJ and calypsonian status is known to have a great influence on Bajan youth. You therefore cannot underestimate the impact of Lil Rick singing the political jingle “I wid David and Dem” on the youth. The same young people who uncharacteristically participated in the voting process in full force this year. You should not underestimate the impact of Lil Rick’s photo which appeared in the press proudly sporting a “I Wid Dem” t-shirt.

Also Rick performed at major DLP events and personally introduced and endorsed David on stage to thousands of young people as his choice of leader. There was a certain awareness among the youth as it related to campaigning activity. I heard the boys on the block out by me arguing politics in a most prolific and vociferous manner under their liming tree in my neighbourhood. My seventeen year old son Ramon told me what manifesto promises had caught his attention and who he would vote for if he could.

When the question is asked what made the young people come out to the polls? What made those young people vote for David Thompson? Could the answer be no more than board face Hypa Dog Lil Rick himself!!

Coming Soon; More Political Entertainment Factors

From the Powerful to the Jobless

office-prime-minister.JPG

Prime Minister’s Office Bay Street

It is 11.12 pm and it’s the 15th January 2008 Election results night, I am sitting like the majority of Barbadians with my eyes glued to the television screen as the polling results are being reported.

As I sit here with my entertainment self, I am reminded of the fragility of ministerial political life, where you could go to sleep a holder one of the highest offices in the land and can wake up the next morning jobless.

On the other hand I am an entertainer tonight and tomorrow when I wake up I will still be an entertainer, just like I have been for the past 25 years. That’s why I have always had great difficulty grasping the concept of we the entertainment electorate expected to fear ministers.

The Election results are quite exciting; it’s the stuff good movie thrillers are made of. If it is nerve wracking for us watching the results, imagine the ex-ministers who must now go in tomorrow and clean out there desks. Well change that to today as it is now 12.05 am. Not only Ministers but also certain CEOs in Wanstead Terrace should start looking for a job as well. At this time it is now clear that the Democratic Labour Party is now the governing party and David Thompson is now our new Prime Minister.

Congratulations to the DLP from Boyce Voice!

Ugly Politics deserve Ugly Girl Songs

I feel I am going to have to curse both the DLP and the BLP. Both David and Owen. I gun call up and give them piece of my mind!

I was expecting that with all the political song remakes that have been happening somebody would have come to Madd and ask we to remake one of our songs. Not even PEP came to us and offer we a little something… I so R rated vex then….

Our 2007 song “Ugly Girls Tweet” for example, that would have made proper campaign song for one of the female politicians – I won’t say which one and lose my lil pick but you should be able to chose one.

If some one had use “Ugly Girls” as their campaign song, they would have formed a certain kinship with the ugly electorate out there, politicians need to remember that ugly people vote too…

I saw several ugly people waiting in line to vote this morning some one should have had their vote secured. They say politics did get ugly this time around, so they should have had an ugly song.

I even had the song done write and every thing. I was just waiting for the ugly call with some ugly money, but it never came, so for your entertainment and general edification I now present the rewritten lyrics sung to the tune of “Ugly Girls”. This is an exclusive to Boyce Voice and when U read U will know why…

I am an ugly ugly girl

So u can vote for me

And this ugly ugly girl

Will do things for u

Increase pensions for U

Reduce light bills for U

And this Ugly Ugly Girl will never lie to u

Cause ugly girls does be tweet tweet

This Ugly girl tell u vote for me

Ugly girls does be tweet tweet

These Ugly girls tell U vote for me …

Pull up pull up yuh idiot. If that song did get out that ugly politician woulda been sitting in parliament tomorrow…
I DUN…
P.S
I noticed when I voted this morning they provided a pencil for me to make my X. Can’t they afford pens or what? I found that to be very strange and disturbing. I have not written with a pencil in years next thing yuh know somebody rub out my vote and change it. I voted for the ugliest candidate, my ballot best not change…

Today is polling day, did you cast your vote yet?
Well you can stay in the comfort of your on home and cast your vote for your favorite political jingle on Boyce Voice…

Here is the final entrant for the “Political Jingle of the Road” competition entitled “Regi”, this one being sung by the unmistakable vocals of calypsonian and Cultural Ambassador the Mighty Gabby. “Regi” bigs up our BLP government Minister Reginold Farley You don’t hear this one on the radio so this is an exclusive..
Click above and take a listen too “Regi” will you vote for him or his song?

Lil Rick – We Wid David and Dem

rick-dem-graphic.jpg

As Boyce Voice continues our count down to which song will be “Political Jingle of the Road” we now go to Party Monarch Lil Rick with his hot political selection. It Wukking like a Guinness!

As you can hear from the jingles we have been publishing there are quite a proliferation of political songs dominating the airwaves,.

I heard a “Mia” jingle being sung by Alison Hinds that sounded interestingly unique, only heard it playing from a truck will try to get it to post for you. This would be our Deputy Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley I am speaking about, the Alison chorus sounds amazing.

Do you think the jingles make a difference in your voting decision and in the politician you will back?

Maybe Leader of Opposition David Thompson’s improved polls rating might have been influenced by the Kimberley’s remake of her song “Sweat” which promoted him.

Maybe electoral participants like “PEP” Peoples Empowerment Party” are now disadvantaged because they can’t afford a jingle, if you don’t have a tight political song people would not vote for you.

As I write this I just heard a brand new one on the radio by Tune of Crop Winner Mr Dale whose “Soca Junkie” calypso is now transformed to addicted to the Barbados Labour Party aka “BLP Junkie”. when will it end?

Maybe a smart promoter will get the idea of having one big show featuring all these songs, get the D’s and the B’s  to come out, but no PEP’s as they have no song.

Lets not digress further, this is Rick with “We Wid David and Dem” click and take a listen… would this be your Political Roadmarch?
