Comments on Rihanna; The Good the Bad and the Bajan

I have been checking some of the comments on Rihanna’s Grammy performance which were made on some of the international Internet sites. Some of them contain some very negative and disparaging remarks on our Rihanna.

I had heard about nasty comments made about Rihanna on the net, and expressed surprise as ALL of the comments on Boyce Voice were complimentary and supportive. Even Ian Bourne’s comment was not really negative and he was cussed out by Skyblu anyway.

So I hope Rihanna takes note of the contrasting comments between Bajan Boyce Voice and the other international sites. I have heard Rihanna say she does not get the enough support from Barbadians. When you look at the contrasting comments on Boyce Voice and some of the other sites it tells a different story. Bajans are definitely behind Rihanna 100%. Also we must mention the many poetic tributes to Rihanna written by Khadji which you can find on Boyce Voice and his poet corner site.

There is word circulating of Rihanna performing in a planned celebration show that is to happen in Barbados on Thursday. Boyce Voice will update you on details later.

Super Ingrid

Ingrid outside Grammy Awards Venue representing

We should be proud and thankful to Ingrid for making the effort to travel down to the Los Angeles United States to show support for Rihanna in the 2008 Grammy Awards show.
Ingrid had called me and told me she was going down and I was wondering how she would have fared.

As far as I know Grammys is an invitation only thing even if she got down there how would she get in?
I had visions of Ingrid being thrown unceremoniously on her butt through the venue door.
Ingrid however, being the 100 lbs of resourceful person she is, was able to overcome all obstacles financial and other wise to witness history (like P’Oui said) when our Barbadian girl Rihanna received her award.

Ingrid’s entire trip was being video taped by camerman Alwyn to produce a documentary to hopefully show on our CBC television, I look forward to seeing it. (If you know somebody on CBC board you should put in a word for this production)

Ingrid on her Bmobile Blackberry phone talking to me, she had best be talking to me…

I asked Ingrid why did she make the effort and she said “I think it is imperative that some sort of Bajan presence be here (Los Angeles) to show support for Rihanna at such a significant time in her career”.

Boyce Voice and all Bajans owe a debt of gratitude to Ingrid for making the effort to represent us and support Rihanna.
Kudos to Super Ingrid!!

Ingrid at Ihop resturant doing something she loves to do, eat! This is one woman that can put away food though I don’t know where she puts it as she only weights 100 lbs.

At least she eats and dos’nt “bite”

Congrats to our Rihanna; Barbados gets Grammy (Full Results)

rihanna-at-grammys-2008.jpg

Congratulations to our girl Rihanna doing Barbados Proud winning her first Grammy and the stellar performance she put down at the awards last night!

I felt so proud as an entertainer, a Combermerian and a Barbadian when Rihanna stepped out on that stage and flawlessly excecuted her routine. If you were to look at the performance embarrasments like that of Britney Spears you would recognise that you cannot take a good performance for granted.

Did you hear when she shouted out Barbados? We love you too Rihanna that is why we Bajans should not be like what I stated in my previous post and we need to celebrate the accomplishments of this great performer, Rihanna for ever.

Coming up soon exclusive photos from our Ingrid with Rihanna’s dad etc taken by Photographer Alwyn Harding

Support Rihanna;You Ungrateful Dogs

tyson-dog-blog-shot.JPGduke-dog-pic-blog.JPG
Above: Two ungrateful Bajan dogs liming

We are such a bunch of ungrateful dogs then…. I mean wunnah Bajans dat reading Boyce Voice right now. Let me tell you how rassole ungrateful we are…

Yuh got a Woman like Rihanna, nominated for 6 Grammy awards, allow me to reiterate, 6 GRAMMY AWARDSde woman up fuh then, and wunnah bout de place acting like it is nuthing.

All like now every single radio station in Barbados and our lone TV station should be celebrating and showing support with a video and audio Rihanna marketing blitz. Every street corner, every rum shop and every grocery store should be abuzz with conversation about our girl Rihanna, how she is going to take the Grammy’s by storm, our female “David” that will be “slaying” the United States “Goliath”.

All like now we should have a massive public party in Independence Square the City, with big wide screen TV’s showing the Grammy’s via satalite and having a big Rihanna music party while waiting for the results.

Celebrating when Rihanna wins and talking bout how great the American Grammy judging system is, or booing if she loses and cursing the Grammy judges and calling them stinking dogs.

I did hear one radio station doing Rihanna support ads,but one is not enough.

Ingrid from Krosfyah call me and told me she was going down to United States to support Rihanna but it was just her.

We should have a whole official Barbados contingent traveling to the U.S to support Rihanna, our Bajan girl that is taking the world by storm and putting us on the entertainment map.

But we are like what Admiral call the calypsonians back in 2004 “ungrateful” and what Boyce Voice is calling you in 2008 “dogs”.

Strike Power!

broadway-strike-photo.jpg

Broadway is on strike! The world famous Broadways theatrical productions in New York have been put on hold, not because of the big stars or the writers, but the stage hands. The Stage hand union brought over two dozen plays to a grinding halt and took to the picket line over working conditions.

Big mega plays like the Phantom of the Opera, How the Grinch stole Christmas, Les Miserables had to close their doors and lose mega revenue because of the escalation of protest action by stagehands. In Hollywood there is a writers strike on which is also threatening the production of films and television. I guess the writers and stage hands are holding Broadway and Hollywood to ransom. When we protest here in Barbados, that is what we are accused of doing.

We Bajan entertainers are branded as villains for threatening to withhold our services and music at Crop Over because of outstanding grievances. The truth is that it is an international accepted norm – as demonstrated by our overseas comrades – that when things are not going the way you want and you have had enough, you shut things to ass down.

Our government always speaks of how standards in Barbados have improved and we now have an international airport and international venue like Kensington Oval. Therefore there is a dire responsibility on us as entertainers to also show that we too are of international standard. When things don’t go the way we need to, shut the business to ass down!

So that the government can proudly boast, Barbados also has an international entertainment industry, an industry that strikes!

I am Thinking About Dying

elvis-dead-and-rich.jpg

Elvis; Very Dead and Very Rich

The thought of dying is seriously crossing my mind as I read the list of the top 13 top dead earning celebrities for 2007 according to Forbes magazine.

When people that have been dead and buried years ago can be making more money than people who are alive and working hard, dying is an option I think we should all consider. According to Forbes these 13 dead Celebes collectively generated US$247 million in the last 12 months.

The mere fact they are being mentioned in Forbes says big money is being made you don’t see them mentioning Bacchanal Time, Krosfyah nor Lil Rick. To make this list a dead person must have generated at least US$7 million in a year, how many of you reading this made 14 million Barbados dollars last year? Or even in your entire lifetime? Maybe you need to die!

Let us go through the list starting from the bottom:

James Dean ($3.5 million).
Bob Marley ($4 million)
James Brown ($5 million)
Steve McQueen ($6 million
Marilyn Monroe ($7 million)
Tupac Shakur ($9 million)
Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss) ($13 million)
Andy Warhol ($15 million),
Albert Einstein ($18 million
George Harrison ($22 million),),
Charles M. Schulz ($35 million),
John Lennon ($44 million)
Elvis Presley ($49 Million)

May I remind you we are talking United States dollars here, not bajan Trinidadian or Guyanese money. Do you notice there are no calypsonians on the list? Maybe I should switch music genres. When a dead man can make $49 million dollars in 12 months I think its time to think about dying, even though my challenge will be how the hell will I spend the damn money after I am dead? Dead men just don’t tell no tales they don’t spend money either, nor can they write blogs.

Now that I think about it, it’s probably better to be alive and poor than to be dead and rich, what do you think? You don’t sound very enthusiastic…

Anyways, for the time being I think I will cancel the dying thing, just make do with the few Barbados dollars I am making and keep writing Boyce Voice!

In Memory Lucky Dube – It’s Not Easy

lucky-dube-pic.jpg

October does not seem to be a good month for reggae stars, On Friday the world was shocked to hear of the shooting death of Lucky Dube, who was killed in an apparent carjacking in a South African Suburb on Friday.
Earlier this month Tu Face Idibia was also shot by bandits, luckily he survived, unfortunately it was not the same for Dube.
Lucky Dube was seen as one of the Icons of Reggae music, in league with greats such as Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer.
He was also known as a musical “freedom fighter” who was an outspoken critic of apartheid.
It is tragic when a human being who would have contributed so much could be shot for something as trivial and materialistic as a car.

Boyce Voice presents Lucky Dube performing a song that seems appropriately named “Its Not Easy”.

Rihanna Dog Lover

rihanna-and-dog-6.jpg

Have you seen the proliferation of pictures which have inundated the web with our Bajan International superstar Rihanna and her little doggie? The doggie’s name is DJ.
Rihanna does love her little doggie*and takes it every where she goes…

Whether in the supermarket or the spa, Rihanna makes sure her dog is always within reach so she can cuddle and stroke it to her hearts content.

I wonder if it is a Bajan doggie or an American one? Does it bark with an accent or what? Some people feel that Rihanna would now prefer an American doggie but I think regardless that a Bajan doggie would be Rihanna’s first choice.

rihanna-kissing-dog.jpg

Here’s a picture of Rihanna kissing her little doggie. Don’t you love a woman who loves to kiss her dog? I know I do! A girl who kisses her doggie can’t be all bad.

At least Rihanna chooses to walk around with a dog and not a cat. Some women like cats, Ellen DeGeneres recently gave up her dog in favor of her cats, we all know why Ellen would do that. But not Robin Fenty, she is a dog lover.

rihanna-walks-dog-5.jpg

When ever Rihanna calls her dog it comes…
Just the sound of Rihanna calling DJ’s name gets him coming…
Can you blame him? If Rihanna was to call my name I would run and come too…

Why does Rihanna choose to keep company with a small dog instead of those big ugly ones? I am sure a rich girl like her could have had any big dog she wanted. But Rihanna is a smart girl she realises a little doggie goes a long way….!
